Kathleen Doud Reilley
Kathleen Doud Reilley, a native Californian and fifth generation resident of Ventura County, has been a serigraph artist for 20 years, printmaking on paper, fabrics and tile. She recently discovered encaustics while attending an art workshop in Santa Fe, and became enraptured by this ancient medium dating back to 100 BC in Greece. Encaustic paint consists of beeswax, pigment and a resin base. It must be heated before application, and each layer of paint must be fused with heat to the layer beneath. Encaustic paint can be either opaque or translucent. This delicious medium lends itself to boundless methods of application. Paintings are created on the surfaces of birch wood panels or paper that is adhered to plexiglass. "This medium is so satisfying, it smells so divine, that bees and hummingbirds often pass through my studio, attracted to its sweet honey fragrance", Kathleen comments. Kathleen's work often reflects far away places, both in time and in her travels. Her paintings captivate with a sense of space and tranquility.
