Kevin Broad
Kevin Broad was born May 16, 1957. He is the middle child of parents of German and English descent. His family has always lived in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, a quiet community proud of its German Moravian heritage.

Kevin's talent to draw was recognized at an early age. At the age of seven, he became a painting student of Marguerite Callahan, an older woman with a strict impressionistic temperament. He was her student for ten years in her country studio near Easton, Pennsylvania.

In 1975, Kevin majored in Art at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. During his second year at college a religious conversion swept through his family. He continued his studies with Bible scholars at a fundamentalist school in Owatona, Minnesota, called Pillsbury College. Kevin left Pillsbury after a few semesters to become a painter, enrolling himself at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.

The studio space of his former teacher Mrs. Callahan became available and Kevin took the opportunity to live and work in the countryside near Easton. During a formative eleven- year period over the 1980's, he studied painting the natural landscape that surrounded him.

Traversing the countryside on his bicycle, Kevin began this period by completing watercolor paintings of the surroundings. He also began experimentation with manufacturing his own paint, and developed an opaque watercolor similar to gouache. The gouache enabled him to emulsify oil into his medium, thus a progression toward oil painting began.

As his work became more successful, Kevin began exhibiting in the nearby cities of Easton and Allentown. In 1991 the studio that was home to Kevin for eleven years was to be sold, prompting him to move into a studio space in his hometown of Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

Kevin's work in oils was gaining respect among local contemporaries and was then invited to become Artist in Residence at Lehigh University. He taught Plein Air landscape painting and demonstrated oil color grinding techniques. Kevin was accepted to show at the Hrefna Jonsdottir Gallery in Lambertville, New Jersey and continues there today as an artist member.

In 1995, the gallery invited Kevin to do a series of Lambertville landscapes that would be featured during a solo exhibition. The desire to find other inspiration beyond Nazareth led Kevin to painting expeditions from the streets of New York City to the beaches of Miami, Florida.

In 1997, Kevin moved to the Art Museum neighborhood of Center City, Philadelphia. After painting in Germany and Southern France in the spring of 1998, he held his first Philadelphia so exhibition, showing the works he accomplished in Europe.

During the summer of 1999, Kevin painted a series of landscapes in Iceland in preparation for an exhibition that was held at the Hrefna Jonsdottir Gallery in Lambertville, New Jersey.

In addition to Kevin's focus on landscape painting, he finds painting portraits and muralizing an exciting challenge. He has decorated interior spaces with color techniques for several clients. In May 1999, Kevin exhibited a selection of recent portraits at an open studio show in New York City.
