John Baughman
Born in Michigan in 1947, Baughman studied art at the University of Michigan, the University of California at Berkeley and Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. He also learned paper making at the Twin Rocker Paper Mill in Indiana.
Prior to forming the design firm of John Baughman Studios in 1987, which he currently directs, he had been an art dealer for 15 years. “The business relationships that I established with other artists during that period taught me more than any formal art training,” he says. Furthermore, it was as an art dealer that Baughman first associated with designers at trade shows such as NEOCON and Designers’ Saturday.
Since turning full-time to printmaking in 1985, Baughman has worked with virtually everyone in the industry. Designers have placed more of his art than anyone else’s in the world.
But the respect is mutual.
“I don’t think that my pieces are any more artistic than the furniture that’s being built today. The difference is that what I do is on a wall and it’s framed. If a chair had a frame around it, it would be scrutinized just as much as a piece of art,” Baughman says.
He shares his life, and a passion for the outdoors and landscape images with his wife, Jan Richardson-Baughman, who also is an artist.
In the late 1980’s John formed Marshwood Studios Inc. with his wife, Janet. They raise horses and work in their studio on their small farm in Western Michigan.
John’s current work incorporates layers of color and wax on paper and canvas. An avid trout fisherman, he has always used veils of color reminiscent of water in a stream. His work is elegant yet strong. Layers of color and nuance of motion are the background, while division of space with characters and elements of landscape form the frontal plane of his work.
John Baughman’s work has been widely exhibited and included in private and corporate collections worldwide.
